My computer has been fairly slow, and is also quite a few years old (5 or 6 years I think.) I am thinking about upgrading the RAM. What else would improve performance and what should I get?

I am planning on building a computer in the future but have little knowledge on doing so?
The plan as of right now is to have the local computer repair store take my old gateway desktop and use some of it’s parts in a new atx gaming case to upgrade the ram and graphics card and all that good stuff!
I am not going to be doing any major gaming here the only game I play is WoW. Maybe in the future I might play other games but as of right now it’s just that and work for my college courses. I don’t want anything fancy but the guy told me it would cost me around 250-300 for labor and all. He said it probably wont even be 250. But roughly in that area. I was thinking he is probably charging me around 50 bucks for the labor IDK I know I can put one together myself but I need a little guidance. Maybe a idiots book for it or something lol. But here are the specs. Tell me what you think he tells me that I can use most of my component in it. I want a motherboard cpu combo and I will be needing a good graphics card nothing big but enough to run the game and id like it to look pretty good lol. So maybe I can save 50 bucks in labor by doing this myself. Can someone tell me what MB combo I can use with the components I have. Here are the specs I copy and pasted them from Everest Home Edition!

Hey all, I was wondering if this computer is very good? Is it good for gaming? For making 3D animation and modeling? Rendering?
I am thinking about buying it for college, I will be going into computer programming and game design.

Whats a good computer for $500?
I don’t really care about super high specs, thats a waste of money in my eyes. I like playing lots on MMORPGs, and my crapbox computer handles them well enough.

Is my garbage specs on the computer I’m on now, and I’ve managed to play every MMO – except a few.
I want to spend around $500 on a better computer now so I can play more games, and do more stuff with my computer faster. I don’t care for high-tech gaming computers, because I’m not an outrageous gamer, and thats a waste of money to me.
So could someone point me to a desktop, or laptop worth buying?
Thanks. =)
I kind of want it good enough to play Sims 3.
Thanks again.
In Canadian.. thats why I said around $500. Haha.
